Military unveils next generation hula-copters

Sometimes inspiration comes from just a simple slip of the tongue. For example, saying ‘hula-copter’ instead of ‘helicopter’ made my mind immediately visualize helicopters using spinning hula hoops to provide lift instead of the rotor blades.

Usually, I have been impressed with what AI can generate from my random thoughts but this one seemed like a ‘Will Smith eating spaghetti’ type of challenge. The relatively simple concept proved too difficult to prompt my way out of.

Text to image generation on the concept of hula-copters. Run locally using ComfyUI and Flux.2 Klein 9B and Z Image Turbo.

I wanted 4 images of hula-copters.

  1. A diagram like from a kid’s encyclopedia book with all 4 hula-copters next to each other.
  2. An AH-64 Apache hula-copter.
  3. A news or police hula-copter pursuing a stolen vehicle.
  4. A CH-47 Chinook hula-copter with both rotors as hula hoops.

After initial prompt attempts were unsuccessful, I tried a typical trick of starting basic and building the image from there. The basic attempts with no background and just a regular helicopter turned out boringly ok. Trying to get them to render without propeller blades at all was a showstopper. Once the hula hoops were added in, it just got worse. The generators could not understand the word ’eccentric’ as in the opposite of ‘concentric’ to describe the hula hoop. Instead, they went with ’eccentric’ as in crazy, so the hula hoop would be at impractical angles.

Flux.2 Diagram of 4 hula-copters
Hula-copter Diagram Prompt (Flux.2 Klein 9B)

A professional aerospace concept design specification sheet featuring exactly four distinct hula-copter aircraft arranged side by side on a pure solid white background, full aircraft visible, clean studio lighting, realistic engineering visualization, crisp edges, subtle grounding shadows, high detail, no scenery.

Every aircraft has a recognizable real helicopter fuselage but uses a revolutionary hula-hoop rotor system instead of conventional propeller blades. The main lift mechanism is a single large, rigid, vibrantly colored hula hoop rotating rapidly around the helicopter’s central vertical rotor shaft, like a hula hoop spinning around a person’s waist. The hoop is conspicuously off-center, tilted and dynamically displaced relative to the shaft, physically contacting the central shaft at a single point as it orbits. The shaft pushes against the moving hoop at the contact point, sustaining the aircraft in flight. The colorful hula hoop is a continuous circular ring with slight rotational motion blur. ABSOLUTELY NO conventional rotor blades. The vertical shaft is visibly displaced from the geometric center of the hoop. The hoop is eccentric, not concentric. The shaft touches the inner rim at one distinct point while the remainder of the ring is asymmetrically spaced around it.

The helicopter has zero propeller blades. The hula hoop completely replaces the main rotor, and on the Apache and transport aircraft it also replaces the tail rotor. No blades are attached to, inside, or behind the ring.

Four clearly differentiated aircraft, arranged left to right:

TRANSPORT HULA-COPTER: rugged utility helicopter with a large enclosed cargo cabin, sliding doors, landing skids, a broad rainbow hula-hoop main rotor. NEWS HULA-COPTER: sleek civilian news helicopter with a glass cockpit, compact camera pod underneath, broadcast station markings, a bright yellow, cyan, magenta and orange rotating hula-hoop rotor. MILITARY ATTACK HULA-COPTER: aggressive AH-64 Apache attack helicopter silhouette, tandem cockpit, stub wings with rockets and missiles, olive-drab armor, military sensors, a vivid red-orange-yellow hula-hoop replacing its main rotor and a smaller matching hula-hoop replacing its tail rotor. CHINOOK HULA-COPTER: recognizable tandem-rotor CH-47 Chinook transport helicopter, long twin-rotor fuselage, front and rear vertical rotor shafts, each topped by a separate large offset multicolored rotating hula hoop in place of all rotor blades. Both hoops visibly contact their respective shafts. Maintain accurate relative proportions, clear separation between all four aircraft, consistent three-quarter side views, premium industrial design sheet, photorealistic materials, mechanically legible rotor-shaft-to-hoop contact, realistic aviation design mixed with absurdly inventive engineering. White background only. No conventional propellers, no hidden hoops, no floating decorative rings, no extra aircraft, no text, no labels, no watermark.

Z-Image Turbo LAPD Hula-copter
LAPD Helicopter Prompt (Z-Image-Turbo)

Cinematic aerial shot of a Los Angeles police hula-copter hovering over a glowing nighttime freeway during a high-speed traffic pursuit. The police helicopter features a bright glowing neon blue and red hula hoop spinning rapidly around its central shaft instead of traditional rotor blades. Below, police cruiser lights flash red and blue, casting reflections on escaping cars. Dynamic motion blur on the spinning hula hoop, sharp focus on the helicopter, dramatic urban night lighting, photorealistic, 4k.

Flux.2 LAPD Hula-copter
LAPD Helicopter Prompt 1 (Flux.2 Klein 9B)

A thrilling cinematic action photograph of an LAPD police hula-copter tracking a vehicle pursuit on a crowded Los Angeles highway at dusk. The aircraft’s main rotor is uniquely replaced by a wide, glowing hula hoop spinning horizontally around the central mast. Searchlight beam cutting down through the smog, dense grid of freeway traffic, motion blur on the spinning hoop, hyper-detailed, film grain, blockbuster movie aesthetic.

Flux.2 LAPD Hula-copter
LAPD Helicopter Prompt 2 (Flux.2 Klein 9B)

Photorealistic cinematic aerial pursuit over Los Angeles, California, captured from a news helicopter’s perspective. A blue-and-white LAPD-style police hula-copter flies low above a busy freeway, following several police cruisers chasing a fleeing dark sports car through traffic. Red and blue emergency lights reflect off car roofs. Palm trees, freeway interchanges, sprawling city blocks and the distant downtown skyline establish the location. Warm late-afternoon sunlight, realistic atmospheric haze, professional aerial photojournalism, dynamic composition.

The police aircraft has authentic helicopter proportions, a glass cockpit, side doors, landing skids, a belly-mounted surveillance camera and police markings. Instead of a conventional main rotor, a thick, rigid, rainbow-colored hula hoop rotates around the vertical rotor shaft. The hoop is distinctly offset from the shaft, leaning and orbiting asymmetrically, with its inner circumference physically contacting the shaft at one visible point. The contact point is structurally clear. The ring is striped in electric blue, cyan, yellow, magenta and orange, with natural rotational motion blur. The tail rotor is also replaced by a smaller off-center multicolored hula hoop contacting its shaft. There are no conventional rotor blades.

The helicopter banks naturally over the freeway, the eccentric ring tilted with the aircraft’s movement. Realistic lighting, mechanically coherent construction, convincing aircraft materials, sharp vehicle details, wide cinematic framing and an energetic sense of motion. The absurdity comes from the ingenious hula-hoop flight mechanism rendered with complete photorealistic seriousness. No decorative halo rings, no disconnected hoops, no conventional propellers, no cartoon rendering, no illegible signage, no watermark.

Flux.2 Apache
Apache Prompt 1 (Flux.2 Klein 9B)

Photorealistic military aviation action photograph, viewed from a high oblique overhead camera angle, looking DOWN at an AH-64 Apache-inspired attack hula-copter as it fires a Hellfire missile at a Russian T-72 main battle tank below. The camera is above and slightly ahead of the helicopter, looking toward the ground at approximately a 55-degree downward angle. Show the entire helicopter, its complete rotor mechanism, the missile in flight, and the tank in one coherent composition. The helicopter occupies the upper-center of the image; the tank is clearly visible on the ground in the lower-right quadrant. Rugged dusty battlefield, tire tracks, scattered debris, scrubland, muted olive and brown colors, realistic atmospheric haze.

The helicopter has a recognizable Apache silhouette, tandem cockpit, olive-drab armored fuselage, angular sensor turret, stub wings and realistic Hellfire missile launch rails. One AGM-114 Hellfire missile has just been fired toward the Russian tank. Show the missile traveling diagonally downward toward the tank, with a bright exhaust flame and a clearly visible smoke trail connecting its trajectory to the launcher. Dust and sparks erupt beside the tank as the missile reaches its target.

CRITICAL ROTOR DESIGN — NO PROPELLER BLADES WHATSOEVER:

The helicopter does not have a conventional main rotor. There are absolutely ZERO rotor blades, ZERO blade-shaped appendages, ZERO cross-shaped rotor hubs and ZERO conventional helicopter rotor assemblies.

Instead, its entire main lift mechanism is ONE thick, rigid, circular, rainbow-striped hula hoop. The hoop is a structural rotating ring made of glossy segmented red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue and magenta material. It replaces every component of the conventional main rotor blades.

The central vertical rotor mast is visibly OFF-CENTER relative to the circular hoop. The mast is deliberately displaced toward the rear-left quadrant of the hoop, rather than passing through its geometric center. The shaft visibly terminates against and physically presses into the hoop’s inner circumference at one single, unmistakable contact point. A clearly visible mechanical coupling at this contact point transfers rotational force from the shaft into the ring.

The hoop’s circular center is substantially displaced from the mast. The shaft and hoop must NOT be concentric. Show a large, obvious difference between the hoop’s geometric center and the shaft’s position. The ring tilts diagonally across the overhead view and rotates in an eccentric, hula-hoop-like orbit around the off-center mast. The ring appears to be an active mechanical lift system, not a halo, antenna, ornament or decorative accessory. A short exposed drive linkage and reinforced contact bracket visibly connect the mast to the hoop’s inner rim at the single contact point.

The overhead perspective must make the entire circular ring easy to inspect. Show the complete circumference without cropping it. Use a distinct multicolored ring against the olive-drab aircraft body and subdued battlefield terrain. A small matching hula hoop replaces the tail rotor, also visibly offset from its tail shaft and physically contacting the shaft at one point. No conventional tail rotor blades.

Realistic aircraft proportions, mechanically detailed construction, natural shadowing, accurate overhead perspective, photorealistic metal and composite surfaces, crisp rotor geometry, dramatic military documentary photography, cinematic natural lighting. The absurd hula-hoop flight mechanism is depicted with complete physical realism.

STRICT NEGATIVE REQUIREMENTS: conventional rotor blades, helicopter propellers, four-blade rotor, five-blade rotor, cross-shaped rotor, centered hoop, concentric ring, symmetrical ring around mast, decorative halo, disconnected ring, floating ring, ring mounted like an antenna, multiple main hoops, duplicated rotor systems, obscured rotor contact, cropped hoop, unreadable missile trajectory, cartoon, illustration, text, watermark.

Another attempt with Flux.2:

Flux.2 Apache

Here’s a bad Apache from Z-Image-Turbo:

Z-Image-Turbo bad Apache
I don’t know what that is but it’s not a hula hoop.

In case the realism was a problem, I tried going with an animated style:

Flux.2 Apache

Apache Prompt 2, anime style (Flux.2 Klein 9B)

An outrageously epic, high-action anime illustration of an AH-64 Apache attack helicopter transformed into the legendary HULA-COPTER, an absurdly powerful combat machine that defies the laws of aviation. It has absolutely NO conventional propeller blades anywhere. Its main rotor is replaced entirely by enormous, brightly colored hula hoops spinning horizontally above the helicopter. Its tail rotor is replaced by smaller spinning hula hoops mounted at the end of the tail. Complete circular rings only. No ordinary rotor blades whatsoever.

The aircraft retains the instantly recognizable Apache design: twin tandem cockpit canopies, angular armored body, short weapon pylons loaded with missiles and rockets, targeting optics, and rugged landing gear. Neon pink, electric blue, lime green, orange, and yellow hula hoops spin with supernatural speed, creating enormous luminous circular energy trails around the main rotor mast and tail. The hoops flex and vibrate dramatically as if channeling an impossible amount of rotational energy.

The Hula-Copter rockets through a storm-filled battlefield at an insane angle, banking sharply between towering explosions. Missiles streak across the sky, clouds split apart in its wake, shock waves distort the atmosphere, and flaming debris spirals through the air. The colorful hoop rings leave rainbow contrails that slice through thick smoke. The cockpit glass reflects the fiery explosions below. The helicopter looks terrifyingly powerful despite its ridiculous rotor design.

Anime aesthetic: premium Japanese action anime, dynamic hand-drawn linework, bold ink outlines, intense cel shading, dramatic perspective distortion, exaggerated foreshortening, speed lines, explosive impact frames, vibrant saturated colors, intricate mechanical anime design, glowing highlights, dramatic rim lighting, richly layered smoke and clouds, high-contrast shadows, spectacular sakuga-style action sequence, theatrical anime movie poster quality.

Camera and composition: extreme low-angle tracking shot from slightly ahead and below the aircraft, three-quarter front view, helicopter banking hard toward the viewer, full main hula-hoop assembly clearly visible, tail hoops visible in silhouette, dramatic diagonal composition, missiles and debris creating depth, powerful sense of forward momentum.

Mood: deadly serious military action applied to an utterly ridiculous concept. The helicopter is portrayed as a fearsome elite war machine, not a toy or a cartoon gag. The visual humor comes entirely from the fact that colorful hula hoops are its only rotor blades.

Critical constraints: The main rotor has no conventional blades, only complete circular hula hoops. The tail rotor has no conventional blades, only smaller complete hula hoops. No propeller blades disguised by motion blur. No ordinary helicopter rotor silhouette. Keep the rings open in the center, clearly circular, colorful, and visually distinct from solid discs. Preserve the recognizable AH-64 Apache fuselage and tandem cockpit.

Flux.2 Chinook 1st attempt
These look more like Osprey to me.

Chinook Prompt 1 (Flux.2 Klein 9B)

A photorealistic, high-detail action shot of a real CH-47 Chinook heavy-lift transport helicopter flying outdoors. The helicopter has absolutely NO propeller or rotor blades on its front or rear rotor hubs. Instead, replacing the blades on each of the two vertical rotor shafts is a large, vibrant, multi-colored hula hoop. Each hula hoop is mounted completely off-center and eccentrically, with the inner rim of the hoop directly touching and pivoting around the vertical rotor shaft at a single distinct point, spinning dynamically like a hula hoop around a person’s waist with slight rotational motion blur. The Chinook is hovering low over a bustling industrial cargo yard, actively lifting a large heavy shipping container via heavy-duty cargo slings attached to its underside. Realistic daylight, natural shadows, sharp engineering details, cinematic composition, 8k resolution.

Flux.2 Chinook second attempt
Chinook Prompt 2 (Flux.2 Klein 9B and Z-Image-Turbo)

A cinematic, photorealistic image of a U.S. Army CH-47 Chinook heavy-lift helicopter in a 3/4 front view, hovering over a bustling commercial shipping container port. A dramatic and surreal motion blur is applied to both the front and rear tandem rotor systems, which are replaced by massive, perfectly circular, rainbow-gradient light-trails, swirling like giant hula hoops with multi-colored light trails and sparkles. Below the helicopter, a brown shipping container with the prominent white text “ZIM” and small white stars is actively suspended and lifted by heavy cargo straps. In the foreground, there are stacked shipping containers, including a prominent green one with the bold white text “EVERGREEN”. A detailed red industrial straddle carrier forklift is visible on the tarmac. Several port workers in high-visibility safety vests and helmets are present: one walking on the left and a group of three on the right.

After striking out so badly, I decided to see if something more cutting edge could do it. Here are Gemini’s attempts.

They’re still not perfect but certainly look a lot better. It could not get the off-centered nature of how a hula hoop moves. I wanted the inside of the hula hoop to contact the shaft and rotate by rolling around it.
