The Lifecycle of a Book

Text to video generation for a looping video to show the lifecycle of a book. Run locally using ComfyUI and MiniMax H3.

After seeing articles about AI companies buying books by the pallet from secondhand bookstores, I had the idea for this video. It shows the lifecycle of a book, from a seed becoming a tree, to making paper, the author writing the story, the book being printed, to the reader enjoying it. Then AI buys the book secondhand, digitizes it, shreds it, and the shredded remains are returned to the earth as mulch for the next tree.

I wanted to make a video in the style of a whiteboard explainer animation, so a hand draws some of the elements in the video.

I used ComfyUI with MiniMax H3, sometimes specifying a first frame to carry the design consistency to the next clip. The clips were then edited together with Shotcut. The multiple clips approach was used because it made it less time-consuming to re-render if there was a mistake.

The Final Prompt (MiniMax H3)

MiniMax H3 / ComfyUI — 9:16 Portrait Video Production Prompt

Global requirements

Create a professional, educational, subtly ironic whiteboard animation about the complete lifecycle of a book.

Output format: Vertical 9:16 portrait composition, intended for YouTube Shorts. Target finished runtime approximately 2 minutes 47 seconds.

Style: Clean white background, crisp black marker outlines, simple hand-drawn illustrations, restrained flat colors, and a visible animated hand holding a black marker. Every major object is drawn into existence before it begins moving.

Palette: Black outlines, green foliage, brown wood and soil, white paper, and a consistent red-and-blue book cover. The shredded remains of the original book must visibly retain red, white, and blue fragments.

Portrait composition: Design every shot specifically for a narrow vertical frame. Keep the principal subject centered, large, and easy to recognize on a phone. Stack objects vertically where necessary. Avoid overly wide scenes, tiny background details, and important content near the frame edges. Use a fixed, straight-on camera unless a slow push-in or vertical reveal helps explain the action.

Text: MiniMax H3 must render the specified English text within the generated video. Use dedicated shots for important text. Draw the text slowly, keep it stationary once complete, and leave it visible long enough to read. Use exact spelling and capitalization.

Continuity: Use the same drawing hand, marker, line thickness, illustration style, and color palette throughout. The original book must retain its red-and-blue cover and the title “The Lifecycle of a Book.” The AI-generated replacement book must have a visibly different cover.

Story: A tree becomes paper, paper becomes a book, an AI company digitizes the book and uses its contents to generate a new book, the original physical book is shredded, and its colored remains become mulch around a new tree.

Loop: The final frame must match the opening frame exactly in composition: one small brown seed centered on a thin horizontal ground line against a clean white background. No fade, text, or extra objects at the loop point.

Audio: Generate no audio, dialogue, narration, sound effects, or music.

PART 1 — A SEED IS PLANTED

Shot 01 — The seed

Duration: 4 seconds

Opening frame: a small brown seed rests on a thin horizontal ground line, centered in the vertical frame against a completely white background. A hand holding a black marker enters and draws a simple patch of soil around the seed. Keep the seed and ground line in the exact same position throughout the shot. This composition is the reference for the final frame of the video.

Shot 02 — Roots and sprout

Duration: 5 seconds

The hand draws a simple soil cutaway around the seed. Fine roots extend downward while a small green sprout emerges above the ground. Two leaves gradually unfold. Keep the roots and leaves large enough to recognize in portrait format. Use gentle, natural movement.

Shot 03 — The young sapling

Duration: 4 seconds

The sprout grows into a young sapling. Its stem lengthens, roots spread, and new green leaves appear. A simple outlined sun is drawn near the top of the composition. Finish with the sapling centered in the frame.

PART 2 — THE TREE GROWS

Shot 04 — The gardener and mulch

Duration: 5 seconds

A simple gardener kneels beside the young tree and spreads small pieces of red, white, and blue mulch in a ring around its base. Show individual colored pieces falling and collecting on the soil. These colors deliberately reference the book’s cover and contents. Do not use conventional brown wood-chip mulch.

Shot 05 — The mature tree

Duration: 5 seconds

The sapling grows into a mature tree. Its trunk thickens, branches spread, and a rounded canopy of green leaves develops. The hand draws several small birds perched among the branches. Keep the tree vertically centered, with the trunk and roots visible.

PART 3 — THE TREE BECOMES PAPER

Shot 06 — Harvesting

Duration: 4 seconds

Two simple forestry workers appear beside the mature tree. One operates a chainsaw at the trunk’s base. The tree leans and falls in a controlled direction away from the workers. Show the fallen tree clearly without graphic details.

Shot 07 — Logs and truck

Duration: 5 seconds

The felled trunk is divided into large logs. A logging truck is drawn beside them, and the logs are loaded securely onto the truck bed. The truck drives from left to right toward a paper mill. Keep the truck and logs prominent within the vertical frame.

Shot 08 — The paper mill

Duration: 5 seconds

A simple paper mill is drawn. Logs enter one side. Show bark removal, wood chips being produced, and the chips entering a pulp-processing tank. Pale wood pulp moves toward the paper-making equipment. Simplify the machinery to the essential steps.

Shot 09 — Pulp becomes paper

Duration: 4 seconds

Pale pulp is spread into a thin layer, pressed through large rollers, and dried into smooth white paper. A giant paper roll emerges from the machinery. The sheet is continuous and unbroken.

Shot 10 — The whiteboard becomes a page

Duration: 4 seconds

A single white sheet unrolls toward the viewer until it fills the entire frame. The paper’s white surface blends seamlessly with the whiteboard background. The machinery disappears, leaving a clean white surface.

PART 4 — A STORY IS BORN

Shot 11 — The author

Duration: 5 seconds

The hand draws a desk, chair, author, pen, and manuscript. The author writes steadily, and lines of writing accumulate on the page. Leave a clear area at the top for the manuscript title.

Shot 12 — The manuscript title

Duration: 5 seconds

Close-up of the manuscript. The hand writes the exact title in large, neat lettering:

The Lifecycle of a Book

Spell every word correctly. Center the title at the top of the page. Keep the page still after writing, allowing the title to be read clearly.

Shot 13 — Printing the story

Duration: 5 seconds

A simplified printing press is drawn. Blank sheets feed through the machine, rollers turn, and black printed lines appear on the paper. Printed sheets emerge in a steady rhythm and collect in a neat stack.

Shot 14 — Binding the book

Duration: 5 seconds

Printed sheets are stacked, folded, aligned, and bound. A red-and-blue cover is fitted around them. The finished book closes and stands upright. The hand writes the exact title on the front cover:

The Lifecycle of a Book

Use clear lettering and correct spelling. Keep the title on the front cover and hold the finished book still.

PART 5 — THE BOOKSTORE AND READER

Shot 15 — The bookstore shelf

Duration: 4 seconds

A simple bookstore shelf is drawn with several plain books. The red-and-blue book is placed prominently in the center. A customer enters, notices the book, and removes it from the shelf. The cover remains unchanged.

Shot 16 — The purchase

Duration: 5 seconds

The customer examines the book, carries it to a checkout counter, and purchases it from a shopkeeper. The customer leaves holding the same red-and-blue book.

Shot 17 — Reading at home

Duration: 5 seconds

The customer sits comfortably in a chair and opens the book. Pages turn gradually. The reader smiles, pauses thoughtfully, and becomes immersed in the story. Keep the setting minimal, with the book large enough to recognize.

PART 6 — A SECOND LIFE

Shot 18 — The used bookstore

Duration: 4 seconds

The reader places the book on a shelf among other used books. The hand draws a rectangular sign above the shelf and writes the exact words:

USED BOOKSTORE

Use clear, correctly spelled lettering. Hold the completed sign still. The original book remains visible below it.

Shot 19 — The AI company buys the book

Duration: 5 seconds

A representative of an AI company enters the used bookstore, selects the red-and-blue book, and purchases it. The representative leaves carrying the book. Keep the transaction simple and visually clear.

Shot 20 — Arrival at the AI office

Duration: 5 seconds

The representative enters a minimalist technology office containing computers, server cabinets, and scanning equipment. The representative places the book beside a high-speed document scanner. Maintain the whiteboard style and avoid corporate logos.

PART 7 — THE BOOK ENTERS THE WORLD OF AI

Shot 21 — Scanning begins

Duration: 6 seconds

The book is opened beneath a scanning camera. A page-turning mechanism positions the first page under the scanner. A thin line of light travels across the printed page, showing the scanning process. Keep the physical book clearly visible.

Shot 22 — Page after page

Duration: 6 seconds

Pages turn one at a time beneath the scanning camera. Each time, a thin scanning line crosses the page. Printed marks are captured and represented as simple digital symbols flowing toward a computer. Show repeated page turns so it is clear that the entire book is being digitized.

Shot 23 — From paper to digital information

Duration: 5 seconds

Show the open book, scanner, and computer in one simple portrait composition. The computer displays a digital representation of the scanned page. Lines of data move toward the server cabinets. Make the relationship between the physical page and its digital counterpart unmistakable.

Shot 24 — The digital collection

Duration: 5 seconds

The last pages pass through the scanner. A completed digital document appears on the computer display, and data streams move into the server cabinets. The original physical book is closed and removed from the scanner while the digital document remains on screen.

PART 8 — THE AI WRITES A NEW BOOK

Shot 25 — The AI processes the book

Duration: 5 seconds

The hand draws a computer workstation connected to server cabinets. The monitor displays the digitized book as a document containing lines of text. The document moves visually into a simplified AI processing system. Data symbols travel toward the computer, and a new blank manuscript appears on the screen.

Shot 26 — A new story is generated

Duration: 5 seconds

Lines of newly generated text appear progressively on the blank manuscript displayed on the computer. Several new pages accumulate into a digital document. Keep the original digitized book visible as a separate source document.

PART 9 — THE ORIGINAL BOOK IS SHREDDED

Shot 27 — The conveyor

Duration: 5 seconds

The original red-and-blue book moves along a conveyor belt toward an industrial paper shredder. The newly generated book remains separate and intact in the background. Keep the original book’s cover colors visible.

Shot 28 — Shredding

Duration: 4 seconds

The shredder pulls in the original book. The red-and-blue cover and printed pages enter the machine progressively. Narrow strips of paper fall into a collection bin. Show the original book being completely destroyed. Do not shred the newly generated book.

Shot 29 — The remains

Duration: 5 seconds

The machine stops. A bin filled with shredded paper sits beneath the shredder. Red, white, and blue fragments are clearly visible among the paper strips.

PART 10 — BACK TO THE EARTH

Shot 30 — The mulch returns

Duration: 8 seconds

00:00-00:01 | The first_frame is an industrial paper shredder with a bin on wheels to catch the shreddings behind it.

00:01-00:04 | The bin filled with narrow red, white, and blue paper strips rolls on its wheels to the right and the hand draws a ramp into the back of a green box truck with writing on the side that clearly says: Gardeners

00:04-00:06 | The bin rolls up the ramp and into the back of the truck. The truck’s rear lift gate rolls down to a close.

00:06-00:08 | The truck drives off screen to the right and the screen is entirely white.

The final frame must match the opening frame in scale, position, orientation, and background. No fade, no text, no extra objects, and no additional movement. The video should loop directly into Shot 01, where the seed begins to sprout.
