Vampire: 'When did lowercase T's start hurting?'

I came across a screenshot of this meme going viral and it got a good chuckle out of me:

Imagine you were a vampire nowhere near the Middle East and don’t know who Jesus is but the day after he dies, you gotta figure out why lowercase t’s started hurting.

— Andrew Nadeau (@TheAndrewNadeau)

I couldn’t stop picturing it, so I made a video to illustrate it. Text to video generation for an animated YouTube Short. Run locally using ComfyUI and MiniMax H3, edited in Shotcut.

The gag needed to build: a small zap from the lowercase t’s in the newspaper, a bigger zap from the fork and knife floating in a t-shape, and the biggest zap from the broadsword on the wall. Only then does he close the newspaper and see the front page. The viewer gets to read the headline the whole time; he doesn’t. I don’t love swears, but the ending seemed funny with him directly addressing God, given the tie to Jesus.

I rendered rough drafts at 0.1MP (9:16) to work out the problems before committing to a full 0.4MP render. Each draft took about a minute and a final took about 20 minutes. Some things I learned along the way:

  • Glowing orbs and lens flares show up at 0.1MP but disappear at higher resolutions, so they weren’t worth prompting away.
  • Text rendered surprisingly well. The headline had to be split into three short stacked lines (“JESUS CHRIST” / “OF NAZARETH” / “CRUCIFIED”) or the 9:16 frame cropped it. Lowercase headlines worked well for the t’s.
  • The newspaper needed a clear front and back. The front page faces the viewer from the first shot while he reads an inside page, so the back page needed something specific. A grocery ad with almost no words worked (extra words came out as gibberish).
  • Silverware loved to make an X. When told to lay the fork and knife “parallel,” they kept ending up crossed. Putting the knife on the left rim of the plate and the fork on the right rim worked. It also kept adding a second place setting no matter how many times I said there wasn’t one.
  • Fangs got attached to his lower lip and separated when he talked, so I dropped them. The red eyes and widow’s peak are enough.
  • 18 seconds worked even though the model is trained for about 15.

No render got everything right, so I spliced two finals together in Shotcut: the lowercase t clip from one and the rest from the other. In post-production, I also added an opening line that says “About 2,026 years ago…” and the Intrusive Slop image at the end.

The Prompt

Style: Stylized 3D animated cartoon, exaggerated expressive faces, soft rounded shapes, warm candlelight against cool blue moonlight, cinematic vertical framing. Comedic timing. Setting: A gothic stone castle kitchen at night. A tall arched window shows a black night sky with a full moon. A few candles in iron wall sconces give steady, still light. A large plain steel broadsword is mounted point-down on the stone wall behind the table, its crossguard and hilt forming a clear cross shape. Subject_definitions: <S1> is a tall, pale vampire man with slicked-back black hair, a sharp widow’s peak, and red eyes. He has no fangs: his teeth are plain, ordinary, flat human teeth. He wears striped flannel pajamas, a burgundy velvet bathrobe and fuzzy black slippers. He is the only character. The newspaper: A large broadsheet newspaper. Its front page has a bold headline in three short stacked lines, “JESUS CHRIST” / “OF NAZARETH” / “CRUCIFIED”, above a blurry, out-of-focus black-and-white photo of three crosses on a hill. Its back page is a simple grocery advertisement: big pictures of vegetables and fruit with price tags and the single word “SALE”, almost no other words. S1 holds the newspaper open in front of him the whole time until he closes it near the end.

Action Sequence (18 Seconds Total). The zaps escalate: small, then bigger, then biggest. Only one thing glows at a time. 0-2s: A brief two-second wide shot, then cut quickly to the close-up. S1 sits alone at a heavy wooden table, calm and relaxed, holding the newspaper wide open in front of him and reading an inside page. Facing the camera, the outside of the open newspaper shows the grocery ad back page on the left half and the front page with the Jesus headline and the photo of three crosses on the right half. S1 cannot see the front page. On the table: one empty breakfast plate with exactly one fork and one knife lying flat on the plate, side by side, and a goblet of red juice. The table has no other place settings and no other silverware anywhere. The broadsword behind him is plain dull steel. Nothing glows. Quiet night ambience, a clock ticking. 2-5s: Close-up of the inside page he is reading, his hands holding the edges of the open newspaper. An article headline in clear black lowercase letters reads “get better sleep at night”. First, only the small letter “t"s light up soft gold while his hands stay still on the edges of the paper. He notices the glow and, out of curiosity, slowly reaches out one finger and pokes a glowing “t”. A tiny spark zaps his fingertip like a bee sting. Only after the zap, he flinches, pulls his finger back and says: <d>[English]"Ow!"</d> 5-9s: Medium shot. S1 still holds the open newspaper, now lowered in his left hand so he can see the plate. From the very first frame of this shot, the fork and knife are already floating by themselves a few inches above the plate, glowing gold, locked in a perfectly straight cross shape like a lowercase letter “t”: the knife standing straight upright, the fork lying exactly horizontal across it near the top, at a right angle. S1 did not put them there. They crackle and give a bigger zap to his reaching right hand. Wincing, S1 pulls the fork and knife apart. He lays the knife flat on the left rim of the plate and the fork flat on the right rim of the plate, with a wide gap of empty plate between them, far apart and not touching. The moment they are separated, their glow goes out. The sword behind him is still plain steel. 9-12.5s: The broadsword on the wall behind S1 bursts into the brightest gold glow yet and fires a big crackling zap into his back. S1, still holding the open newspaper, jolts upright, hair standing on end, and twists around to stare up at the glowing sword: <d>[English]"What the hell?!"</d> 12.5-15s: S1 turns back to the table and folds the open newspaper shut with both hands, then turns the closed newspaper around so the front page faces him and the camera sees only its back. Over-the-shoulder shot from behind his head, looking down at the closed, folded newspaper in his hands. Only the front page is visible; the grocery ad is hidden on the back, out of view: the bold headline “JESUS CHRIST” / “OF NAZARETH” / “CRUCIFIED” and the blurry black-and-white photo of three crosses on a hill, fully inside the frame. 15-18s: Close-up of S1’s face from the front. The newspaper is lowered below the frame and is not visible. He slowly realizes what the headline means. Behind him the sword still glows. He looks up and stares straight into the camera with a flat, deadpan, irritated expression, eyes half-lidded, not scared, and says dryly, showing plain ordinary teeth: <d>[English]"God damn it."</d>
